Friends of Kumi Hospital Projects

Friends of Kumi Hospital's project from 2010 - 2012 is titled:
'Human Resources - Recruitment, Retention and Professional Training'

One of the key problems identified by Kumi Hospital is their struggle with obtaining and retaining good human resources. This is due to a variety of reasons - primarily being a limited pool of local trained staff and rural restrictions preventing the hospital attracting the non local staff, as well as general competition for staff from the government funded hospitals. Human resourcesa are vital for Kumi Hospital to provide good quality care to its' patients, and for its' development in becoming 'A Place of Excellence in Rehabilitative Medicine and Disability Care'.

The project will be providing 2 types of grants to staff members. The first are Professional Training Grants and the second, Children's Education Grants.

For 2010 the professional training grants will focus on the trianing of nursing aids and assistants, providing them with the enrolled nursing qualification. The aim is to improve the ratio of qualified to non qualified nursing staff, working on a shift together. Part of this project will also involve the nurses returning from their training, setting up a regular 'In Service Training Programme', for all nurses, nursing aids and nursing assistants at Kumi Hospital.

The provision of children's education grants for the children of staff memebers is aiming to reward, encourage morale and retention, as well as recruitment of the low paid staff. 80% of Kumi Hospital's 249 staff earn under the equivalent of %uFFFD85 a month, whilst school fees for primary an secondary education in this area cost between %uFFFD65-100 a semester (3 months). Considering many of the families in this area have up to 12 children, the staff continually struggle to find funding for their children's education. The purpose of this grant is not only for the short term benefit of the hospital, but also for the long term benefit of the community, as these are some of the children that the Teso region are relying on to provide development in the area, when they grow up.

Projects Completed in 2009

The project for 2009 was part of a long term infection control project (of which the current nurse training and improving nursing procedures are also part of).

The hospital had long identified the need for a shelter for the attendants' and families of their patients, to help reduce the overcrowding and spread of infections, particularly on the 1 surgical ward.
In July 2009, a team of 14 military personnel travelled to Kumi Hospital to assist in the construction of the shelter, in addition to the medical personnel assisting in various clinics at the hospital, and setting up an environmental waste disposal project. By the time that they left, all but the roof of the shelter was completed, with the final work being finished at the end of December 2009.

The shelter is now in use by the attendants and has notibly reduced the crowding on the surgical ward, particularly during the rainy periods (when previously everyone would bring in all their cooking equipment and belongings to sit on their patients' bed until the rain shower was over - proving it to be impossible, for the cleaners to maintain hygenic standards).

A future clinical audit is planned to review the post surgical infection rate on the ward, and compare it to the clinical audit carried out in 2007.
